Four Minutes Before Impact! On December 31, 2024 I wrote the post, a Sad End to 2024, and I speculated what I thought happened with the December 29, Jeju crash, based upon the facts we knew. They were fast, they did not extend flaps, no gear, and no communication beyond a Mayday, and go around, and we know they were not incapacitated because they turned and landed on the centerline of a runway in the opposite direction, but sadly they hit a wall. But that wall in any other city could have saved lives, and these pilots had the ability to…

ANA business class and first class are easily among the best in the world – especially on their new Boeing 777s decked out with “The Room” in business class and “The Suite” up in first. So go figure it’s also become one of the hardest to actually book using miles, too. Over the last few years, the Japanese carrier has gotten incredibly stingy. These days, finding any award availability – flights you can actually book with miles – for ANA premium cabins is virtually impossible unless you’re looking just two weeks (or less) before departure … and that’s if you…

The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) uploaded a short Instagram reel on their official @idfonline page on Jan. 6, 2025, offering previously unseen footage inside one of the IAF’s KC-707s tanker aircraft. The new video of the aircraft – called the Re’em, Hebrew for ‘Oryx’, in Israeli service – included clips of the extremely secretive RVS (Remote Vision System) used by the boom operator to monitor and control the very precise movements required for air-to-air refueling, the core function of the specialized Boeing 707. This is particularly significant because neither images nor videos of this key system have previously been published…
Please excuse my absence from the blogosphere. The day job caught up with me during the last semester and cut back my aviation rambling activity in no uncertain terms. I taught three history courses including (amazing to relate) Britain Since 1688, which was thoroughly enjoyable. The prep work was a slog, but then, most prep work is a slog. What do you think about at Christmas? Apart from the usual family festivities I was considering the prospect of yet more course prep, and whether or not to try to submit a paper for the Spring 2025 meeting of the Kansas…
One of my first challenges as a new CFI was transitioning a retiring Air Force General, with massive fighter jet experience, into GA aircraft – guess who learned more? Not only did this General possess a refreshing lack of ego but this individual also continually emphasized an operational knowledge for pilots he called “fighter pilot math!” As pilots, we have a job to do in a busy environment with limited time and computing power (fortunately not at Mach 1.5). We are not Ph.D.s solving equations with Greek letters – nor should we be. We are optimizers in the heat of…
