The fine folks of the airline industry work extra hard this time of year so that the rest of us can enjoy the holidays. As if that weren’t enough, some of them volunteer to help share seasonal spirit with people in need. As one example, United operates “Fantasy Flights” that bring children experiencing significant medical issues or other hardships to visit Santa at the North Pole. We were able to join this year’s Fantasy Flight out of United’s Newark hub. Between pre-flight festivities, caroling onboard a decked-out 767, and watching the children meet Santa, it was one of the most…
The Modular Aerial Fire Fighting Systems program was instituted in 1971 as a collaboration between the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Defense. The MAFFS system can be installed inside C-130 airplanes without any structural modification in just two hours. The U.S. Northern Command activated eight of its C-130 aircraft equipped with MAFFS (Modular Aerial Fire Fighting Systems) on Jan. 10, 2025 to help fight the raging fires in the Los Angeles area, and some of the aircraft are already at work. All the aircraft are expected to be operational over the disaster zone by Jan. 12, NORTHCOM said.…
In what appears to be a jab at NASA, Rocket Lab this week unveiled its own plan to return rock and dust samples the space agency has been collecting from Mars’ Jezero Crater since 2021.NASA earlier this week said it needs more time to determine the path forward for its Mars Sample Return program, punting a decision until mid-2026. But Rocket Lab believes the best solution is right under the agency’s nose.“We can wait another year, or we can get started now,” the company wrote in a post on X. “This is not our first encounter with the Red Planet.…
Finally some nice flying weather in the North today, although the continuing South-Westerlies got a bit fresher as the day wore on. Fortunately the wind was not too far off down-the-strip for Runway 22 at Dargaville:That was because the NZ Warbirds were in town giving rides to eager customers. The demand for flights was such that people had to be turned away. The aircraft that were giving trial flights were the Harvard ZK-WAR,and the Stearman ZK-BOE2,and the Airtourer T6 ZK-CPG2 ex NZ1762.The Messenger ZK-CMM2 was also there but did not fly. You can see that a good crowd was in…
By Emme Hornung, EAA 1463093 This piece originally ran in the November 2024 issue of EAA Sport Aviation magazine. When you think of Oshkosh, what specific airplanes come to mind? I’m sure many of our members who have been around long enough would immediately think of the Voyager or the Concorde. Some of you may recall one of the many distinguished warbirds that have visited, like B-29s Doc and FIFI. Maybe some of you picture a montage of thousands of homebuilt aircraft that represent the foundation of EAA. But what about ultralights? Perhaps the most recognizable ultralight at Oshkosh is…

Yesterday, the 9th of January 2025, a Canadian firefighting aircraft was grounded after it was struck by a small civilian drone. The aircraft is a Canadair CL-415, an amphibious aircraft known as the Super Scooper. The twin-engine, high-wing aircraft can fly at relatively low speeds in gusty conditions, allowing it to come in closer to forest fires than most aircraft. The CL-415 has an updated cockpit, improvements to the aerodynamics and an updated water-release system. The upgraded turboprop engines have been placed closer to the fuselage, with winglets added to improve the directional stability caused by the repositioning of the…
Here’s how to anticipate the amount of snow or ice on a runway, and what to do if you need to land on a contaminated runway. Preflight Planning What makes a runway contaminated?
