Two people were injured Sunday morning in a small plane crash in Botetourt County, Virginia, according to authorities. Virginia State Police received reports of the crash at 11:50 a.m. in the 400 block of Shawnee Trail.
Emergency responders, including the Fincastle Volunteer Fire Department, arrived at the scene and found the two passengers trapped inside the downed aircraft. The passengers were successfully extricated by the responders, and one of them was airlifted to a hospital via Carilion Clinic Lifeguard 10 for treatment.
A nearby resident, who witnessed the crash, described the harrowing moments leading up to the incident. She was working in her barn when she saw the plane approaching, teetering back and forth as it flew over her barn before crashing in her neighbor’s field. The woman immediately called 911 at approximately 11:40 a.m. to report the crash.
The incident is currently under investigation by Virginia State Police, along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Further details about the cause of the crash and the condition of the injured passengers have not yet been released.
