United Airlines launched a promo called Mile Play in 2018 to encourage MileagePlus members to spend and fly more (they previously had these under various other names). They refresh these offers every few months and have launched a new one for January.
The Mile Play promotion is tailored to each targeted member based on their recent activity with United. For example, it may require buying business class tickets or flying a certain number of trips. A new one just appeared on my account, offering 12,000 bonus miles and requiring two trips by March 17, 2025.

United appears to roll these out every few months, and my most recent one is ok.
It makes sense to sign up and collect the bonus miles for flights you would have purchased and flown anyway.

- Trip (as defined below) booking must be made after registration.
- All flight activity for applicable Trip must be complete on or prior to March 17, 2025.
- Each Trip must have a fare (as defined below) equal to or greater than $225.
- The final fare amount for the Trip will be used to determine satisfaction of offer requirements, including itinerary changes that result in an increase or decrease to the fare and paid upgrades that result in an increase to the fare.
- “Trip” is defined as each unique travel itinerary as documented by United with a confirmation number.
